About the Space
One of the extremely rare private backyard gardens on Malibou Lake. Nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains, this lake house (or lakehouse, if you prefer!) is so secluded that even your sound person will appreciate the tranquility. It’s close enough to the city for cast and crew convenience—and yes, the 1955 Lyman wood boat is included! The yard must be seen to be believed. Fenced on two sides and bordered by the lake on the third, it offers total privacy. Xeriscaped with lush, flowering bushes that bloom seasonally, the space is framed by towering trees that canopy the stone walkway leading to a private wood dock (complete with a charming fountain along the path). The dock itself is spacious enough for production setups and features a unique blend of wood, concrete, and rock along its perimeter. In peak summer, it basks in direct sunlight for hours, while the rest of the day enjoys a soft, diffused glow as the sun arcs behind the trees. This is an upscale, private lakeside location—ideal for romance, comedy, or general Americana, especially stories set at a lakehouse or waterfront. The property doubles as a mountain cabin (one crew even used it as a stand-in for Canada, thanks to the foliage) or a modern boho-chic retreat. Whether you need waterfront action, indoor scenes, mountain views, or an intimate Malibu garden, this location delivers. IMPORTANT PRODUCTION NOTE: The Malibou Lake Mountain Club (the lake's governing body) requires a club site representative to be present for all production shoots, regardless of size. This is a mandatory lake-wide regulation. Site Rep Fee: $500 per day (paid directly to the club, not included in our location fee) Important: This rule applies to ALL productions at Malibou Lake. If you see listings that don't mention this requirement, please note the fee still applies and must be arranged separately with the club prior to shooting. From the very moment we arrived, they went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and cared for. They greeted us with open arms, helping us coordinate parking with ease, giving us a tour of the breathtaking space, and introducing us to their adorable cats. Matt and Crissy were right there with us at every step of the process, ensuring everything was running smoothly, whether it was providing information, assisting with setups, or offering their hospitality in the most thoughtful ways. They even surprised us with delicious fresh-baked cookies and coffee, which was such a delightful and unexpected treat. Seriously—homemade cookies! This type of kindness is hard to come by, and we are eternally grateful to them for providing such a wonderful experience for every member of our team. We were truly blown away. As for the space itself, it truly is a hidden gem. The garden is a photographer's dream, receiving beautiful lighting throughout the day, from sunrise to sunset. The way the greenery casts dappled light at all times creates a magical atmosphere, especially during the afternoon when most places would be battling harsh overhead sun. Here, everything feels peaceful and balanced, making it easy to get perfect shots in any light. The dock was another favorite spot—so peaceful and calming, providing a tranquil escape just steps from the garden. We still can’t believe that this lakeside paradise is just an hour from the city! This place photographs like a dream—every angle, every corner is picturesque and perfect for capturing content. Our entire team left feeling inspired, refreshed, and so grateful for the time we spent there. If you’re looking for a space that offers not only unbeatable beauty but also hosts who go above and beyond to make your experience special, this is it. Matt and Crissy made sure every single detail was perfect, and we couldn’t have asked for a better experience. 1000/10—we couldn’t recommend this place enough! Matt's Lake House was perfect for what I needed and he was really helpful and accommodating. The dock and garden were beautiful.

Wonderful location to use for production! Matt was incredibly accommodating and fully understanding about whatever production needs might be. He goes above and beyond to make sure the shoot is as great as it can be! On the day we were shooting we had issues with noise due to construction happening around the lake, and Matt was able to text the neighbors and coordinate a period of silence for us to get the audio we needed. He was also generous enough to tow/pull one of our actors in the wooden boat with his kayak for certain shots!! Highly recommend renting this location!
